Summer Camp was A Success
Our annual trek to Summer Camp at Cole Canoe Base was a great success even though our departure was blessed with copious amounts of liquid sunshine. Enough to soak our shoes and some gear. Fortunately for us, the rest of the week was filled with mostly blue and sky with some clouds. We had a bit of rain, but nothing to be concerned about.
This year marked our 9th year at Cole Canoe Base and 100% of the troop attended. All 10 Scouts and 5 adult leaders.
We had the opportunity to utilize some new troop equipment - dining fly's - and they worked perfectly. Each patrol had their own separate kitchen setup. There was some getting used to but it all worked well.
Collectively, the Scouts attended the sessions for 54 merit badges however, only 34 were completed at camp. Some of the partials can be completed with the help of troop merit badge counselors.
This is the second year in a row that we earned both the Loyalty Troop award and the Honor Troop award. The requirements for the Loyalty award are very easy to complete. The Honor Troop requirements take a significant amount of activity - a service project, a conservation project, scouts serving as Honor Guard at the camp flag raising and much more.
One of the Honor Troop requirements is a "high adventure" activity of more than 3 hours. We opted this year to participate in a day-long canoe trip. Five canoes departed at about 10:00 am and we returned to camp about 3:00 pm. There were several very shallow areas that caused us to walk past the submerged stones. No big deal though. There were overturned canoes on several occasions - a few of us got wet, but it was a tremendous amount of fun.
We submitted two dishes at the Beast Feast (a camp-wide community pot-luck dinner) and won an award for second place for our dessert. One of our scouts - Robert - won second place in the pie eating contest.
One of the highlights of the week occurred at the final campfire. Mr. Oxley was presented with his Wood Badge beads for completing the requirements he established last September.
All-in-all, the outing was a great experience. We are "camp sick" and can't wait to go back for our 10th year. We hope to make it a time to remember.
Check out the gallery, pictures from summer camp have been posted.
